    Description

Three cents Silver were minted from 1851 to 1873, in three major varieties. 1851 to 1853 had one outline to the star; 1854 to 1858 had three outlines to the star; and 1859 to 1873 had two outlines to the star.
This was the first silver coin to be intentionally struck on a planchet with less than the face value in its metal content, so when silver coins began to be hoarded at the beginning of the Civil War, this was the last denomination to disappear from circulation.
This coin came from the collection of Alfred and Augusta Szego, who were coin dealers and numismatic authors from New York from 1955 to the mid-1990's. I purchased the U. S. coin collection from Mrs. Szego in 1995.
